Secret Three for Stellar Art Classes: Share Generously

Don’t be stingy.

Students sense and resent stinginess. The knowledge of the right brush, the special color and the weight of line may have taken you years to acquire, but pass your knowledge on freely.

Teachers who refuse to share special tips and tricks of the trade with their students reveal their own insecurities.

Are you afraid your students will become more successful than you? One or more might; in fact, if you have many students, probability favors it. That is okay.

I rejoice when my students experience success in the art market. The successful ones are those wise enough to have taken the instruction I’ve given them and combined it with their own ideas, life experiences and style and made their art uniquely their own. Failure and lackluster careers await copycats.

Will there be students who take advantage of your openness and generosity? Absolutely. But most won’t. I’ve taught hundreds upon hundreds of students over the years in every age group, socio-economic class, and personality type. The vast majority have been a delight to my heart.

Pity the miniscule few who take advantage. Most possess a measure of talent and expect everything handed to them, without wanting to labor for it in return. These poor people never succeed because they fail to understand the secrets of hard work and gratitude.

As a student of my students, I give freely of my knowledge and expertise while encouraging them to remain true to themselves and to strive to be the best original artist they can be.
